Lemon (NEXT)

Who: Janicza Bravo, director and co-writer

Logline: A man watches his life unravel after he is left by his blind girlfriend.

The length of the shoot was: 18 days

Our crew size was: 65 (maybe more)

Our camera, lenses and lighting package were: Keslow

The first spark of an idea for this movie came: in 2011.

Janicza Bravo

My favorite scene (or shot) in the film is: everything we shot in the black box theatre. Our protagonist is an acting teacher.

An audience watching my film probably won’t know that: I’m a woman of color.

Influences or references on this film were: Minnie and Moskowitz and The Landlord

The weirdest or most difficult location we shot at was: the hero location in Mar Vista in the second week of shooting. It was beautiful place but close quarters, very hot and next to an airport. On Saturdays people flew planes for recreation. Also, there was construction next door, which made shooting sound fantastic.

The most expensive thing in our budget was: not me.

The biggest lesson I learned making this movie was: check references. Just kidding. Everybody wants to be heard.

I need to give a special shout-out to: my partner Brett Gelman, who is the star and whom I co-wrote the script with.

When I heard we got into Sundance I: wanted to barf.

My favorite film festival moment in my life so far is: winning an award for a short I directed at Sundance some years back.

My favorite moviemaker of all time is: Woody Allen. Am I allowed to say that?

  • After reading a couple articles in this new issue, I am becoming convinced I should allocate some of my budget for VFX! I am writing and directing a film about a cyber relationship between a man and a woman across two different galaxies, though one is unsure which lives on Earth, and I'm struggling with transitional scenes across the Milky Way.
