Tangled Manages to Tie Up the Box Office

Tangled had better watch out—it’s about to have some Cruciatus curses headed its way, courtesy of angry Potterites, as the Disney film managed to beat out Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 at the box office this weekend. Tangled‘s weekend gross was $21.5 million, bringing its total so far to $96.4 million, whereas Harry Potter pulled in a measly $16.7 million in its third weekend, bringing its total gross to $244.2 million. Burlesque and Unstoppable both made exactly $6.1 million over the weekend (aren’t studio executives supposed to have a slap fight when this happens?), but Unstoppable‘s total gross is larger ($68.8 million after the first month; Burlesque has made $26.9 million in two weeks). Rounding out the top five is Love and Other Drugs (weekend gross $5.7 million, total gross $22.6 million).

So for those keeping track, no new releases cracked the top five. New release The Warrior’s Way earned $3.0 million, while Black Swan, out in limited released, earned $1.3 million in only 18 theaters. I Love You, Phillip Morris finally got released, earning $113,200. Other new releases were All Good Things ($40,000), Dead Awake ($30,600), Night Catches Us ($13,700) and the new holiday soon-to-be-classic Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale ($9,520). Rare Exports is about a team of archaeologists who unearth the real Santa Claus… who turns out to be a psychotic child-murderer. If you’re looking for traditional holiday fare to show the kids, I hear It’s a Wonderful Life comes on TV occasionally this time of year.

Out this Friday are The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader and The Tourist. Seeing limited release are The Fighter, The Tempest, The Company Men, The Garden of Eden and (bucking the trend of only releasing movies whose titles start with the word “The” on December 10th) Ry Russo-Young’s You Wont Miss Me, winner of the 2009 Gotham Award for Best Film Not Playing at a Theater Near You.
