Jakob Cedergren (The Guilty, actor)

First-time feature director Gustav Möller’s claustrophobic thriller is undeniably taut, making savvy use of its single location and an immersive sound mix. But make no mistake, it’s Jacob Cedergren’s mesmerizing performance that makes The Guilty work as well as it does. In what is, essentially, a one-man show, the veteran European film and television actor plays a disgraced cop demoted to emergency dispatch duty. When a call comes in from a woman claiming to have been kidnapped, Cedergren’s icy restraint melts into frantic desperation as he struggles to piece together the fractured clues of her abduction. It’s an acting masterclass in emotional honesty and should serve as a compelling calling card to American producers. –Jeff Meyers
