Stephen Susco Goes Back to High School

Published by
Kyle Rupprecht

Screenwriter Stephen Susco is best known for his dark, brooding horror/thrillers, such as The Grudge series and Red. His latest effort, however, is an exciting step in a completey different direction. High School (which Susco co-wrote with Erik Linthorst and director John Stalberg) is a stoner comedy about a high school valedictorian who gets baked with the local stoner and soon finds himself the subject of a drug test. As a result, he decides to concoct an insane plan to get his entire graduating class to face the same fate, and fail. The eclectic cast includes Adrien Brody (as a character named “Psycho Ed,” no less), Colin Hanks, Yeardley Smith (“The Simpsons”), Curtis Armstrong (Risky Business) and Michael Chiklis (as the sure-to-be tough as nails principal). The movie premieres at the Sundance Film Festival on January 24.

Susco (who also serves as executive producer) recently spoke with MM about High School that, with its hilarious premise and great cast, has all the makings of a surprise Sundance smash
