DVD Release: March 31, 2009
R; 120 minutes

Eighteen-year-old orphan from the slums of Mumbai, Jamal Malik (Dev Patel) is on his way to winning $1 million on the Indian version of “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.” How is he doing it? Is it by luck, cheating, genius or is it fate? The police think he’s been cheating, so they torture him into talking… but Jamal has nothing to say to them, except to explain how he knew the answers. By going back into his life, we flashback into a series of episodes describing the murder of his mother in the midst of a religious massacre; how he, his older brother and the girl on whom he has a crush were kidnapped and held hostage by ruthless mobsters; how the two boys became clever commercial conmen; and how betrayal and revenge entered his life, while he constantly searched for Latika (Freida Pinto), the love he left behind as a child. Watch the joyous closing credits.
