Savannah, Georgia Has a History of Mystery

Savannah, Georgia, was named “America’s Most Haunted City” by The American Institute of Parapsychology in 2002. Established in 1733, it is a historical city long rumored to be teeming with paranormal activity, and is one truly horrific location perfect for your next movie.

Savannah has many tours dedicated to its supernatural history, where visitors can witness the spooky sites of legend first-hand. Deceased war heroes are rumored to walk among the living at night at The Colonial Park Cemetery (established 1750), some claim Wright Square is haunted by the ghost of executed indentured servant Alice Riley and Johnson Square is the supposed playground of six-year-old specter “Gracie.”

The Hampton-Lillibridge House is noted as the most haunted house in Savannah and is part of movie lore as well. This home once belonged to Jim Williams, the inspiration for the book and movie Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, which was filmed in Savannah. Other movies shot in this eerie city include The General’s Daughter, The Gift, and Disney’s The Haunted Mansion, as well as segments of Forrest Gump, Cape Fear and “Roots.”

Savannah’s mix of urban and rural settings, including the Historic District, squares and gardens, plantations, untouched coastline and its evergreen forest, make great cinematic backdrops. Known as “The Hostess City of the South,” it’s home to the extremely accommodating City of Savannah Film Office, which offers fee-free permits, capable crews and all the information you’ll need to get the most out of your Savannah shoot.

As for recession-ready financial incentives, the 2008 Georgia Entertainment Industry Investment Act provides a flat tax credit of 20 percent, based on a minimum investment of $500,000 in Georgia on qualified productions to include materials, services and labor. An additional 10 percent flat tax credit is provided if a production company includes an animated Georgia promotional logo on the finished entertainment product.
