Oscars: Power of the Dog Leads With 12 Nods; Gaga and Villeneuve Denied

Jane Campion’s genre-breaking Western The Power of the Dog earned 12 Oscar nominations Tuesday morning, the most of any film in the last year, including nominations in every major category except Best Actress.

Besides The Power of the Dog, the other Best Picture nominees are Belfast, CODA, Don’t Look Up, Drive My Car, Dune, King Richard, Licorice Pizza, Nightmare Alley, The Power of the Dog and West Side Story.

The nominations contained few major surprises, and two clear snubs: One for Denis Villeneuve, who was denied a Best Director nomation for Dune even though the film was nominated for Best Picture and Villeneuve was nominated for its screenplay (with Eric Roth and Jon Spaihts); and Lady Gaga, who campaign hard for her role in House of Gucci but was still denied a nomination.

Other than that, the Oscar nominations spread the love around, recognizing the widely praised Japanese film Drive My Car not only in the Best Picture and Best International categories but also in Best Director, for Ryûsuke Hamaguchi. He and Takamasa Oe were also nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Though there was Speculation that Spider-Man: No Way Home might earn a Best Picture nod, it was not to be: It earned just one nomination, for Best Visual Effects. Some Oscar and Marvel fans had hoped it might land among the top nominees because of the huge audience it could have brought to the ceremony, given its record-breaking box office at a time when so many films are underperforming, and the fact that last year’s ceremony was the lowest-rated ever.
