Italy’s Nòt Film Fest has set its 2022 festival lineup, highlighting the indie-est of indie films in line with its goal of creating a space for filmmakers who have experienced rejection in the movie industry.

Alize Latini and Giovanni Labadess serve as artistic directors for this year’s fest, which will be held from Aug. 23-28. Named “The Sundance of Italy” by Mashable Italia and “One of the August events to look out for” by Vanity Fair Italy, this year’s 5th annual festival will be held, as always, outdoors and in-person in the dreamy city of Santarcangelo di Romagna. The village is nestled in the Italian countryside near the coast of the Adriatic sea, not far from La Dolce Vita director Federico Fellini’s hometown of Rimini, where up-and-coming filmmakers converge with seasoned veterans to enjoy a weeklong celebration of indie movies.

Started by a group of Italian filmmakers in Los Angeles in 2017, Nòt Film Fest reclaims the English word “not,” which can have a negative connotation, and gives it a double entendre with the Italian word “nòt,” which in the local Romagnolo dialect means “night.” The result is a unique “Salon des Refusés,” a French phrase that means “exposition of rejects.” The fest presents a platform and a community for independent filmmakers that values unique and innovative voices dedicated to making cinema indie again.

Past judges and guests include Gabriela Rodriguez, producer of Alfonso Cuaron’s Roma; Slamdance founder Peter Baxter, and Theo Green, the Oscar-winning sound designer of Dune.

In addition to screenings, the festival also offers opportunities for filmmakers to further their career with daily networking events, distribution opportunities, special awards, and free educational resources.

For the first time this year, Nòt Film Fest will host MovieMaker‘s own MovieMaker Production Services Program Pitch Session. There, filmmakers will be able to learn more about our unique program, which has helped dozens of productions get deals, make connections, publicize their films, and save tens of thousands of dollars in the process.

Gavin Booth’s Zero Budget Movie Marketing Workshop is also a great resource for festival attendees looking to promote movies after their budget has been spent.

For those interested in making movies that are both independent and easy on the environment, the Green Filmmaking Workshop sponsored by Distretti Ecologici will show filmmakers how to produce their films with the lightest possible environmental impact, shattering the myth that small films can’t afford to be sustainable.

With 100 films across 10 competitive categories, Nòt Film Fest 2022 will feature 20 narrative features, 30 narrative shorts, 10 feature documentaries, 10 short documentaries, 10 experimental shorts, 10 music videos, and 10 fashion films.

Jury members include: Mammoth Lakes programming director Paul Sbrizzi, actor, screenwriter and director Greta Bellamacina, Vanity Fair Italy contributor Jader Liberatore, MovieMaker writer Caleb Hammond, Jenny De Nucci, Coco Edoghame, Lodo Guenzi, Ileana Dugato, Leonardo Godano, Andrea Passeri, Ludovico Di Martino, Vincent Calmer, Chiara Monateri, Daphne di Cinto, Lorenzo Colonna, and Enrico Zavatta.
