New Moon Rises Over The Competition

As expected, New Moon, the second film in the Twilight Saga series, took the number one spot this weekend at the box office with a staggering $140.7 million. The film broke records for opening day ($72.7 million on Friday) and midnight showing ($26.3 million) sales. New Moon easily outperformed the series’ first installment, Twilight, which brought in $70 million in its opening weekend last November, and bodes well for the next installment, Eclipse, which opens next year .

Sandra Bullock’s new film, The Blind Side, opened at the number two spot with an impressive $34.5 million and pushed Roland Emmerich’s 2012 to the number three spot with $26.5 million. Sony’s Planet 51 ($12.6 million) and Disney’ A Christmas Carol ($12.2 million) rounded out the number four and five spots and edged Lee Daniels’ Precious to the number six spot with $11 million. Although Precious fell from its number three position, the film continues to see increased ticket sales and wider theatrical distribution

Next week, New Moon faces the Robert Williams and John Travolta comedy Old Dogs, along with Viggo Mortensen in The Road and Zac Efron in Me and Orson Welles, but it seems unlikely that the Twilight craze will quickly subside and surrender the top spot.
