With a focus on the independent filmmaker, the MBIFF has quickly gained worldwide recognition as a leading independent film festival. At MBIFF, the quality of content is always more important more than a star-studded cast or famous director. The fest directors believe that a lack of funds should not hold a filmmaker back. The MBIFF is graded on a curve, so that a feature that was made for $20,000 will not compete head-to-head with a feature that had a production budget of $20,000,000. The only exception is the overall winner, where use of funds is taken into consideration. The Myrtle Beach International Film Festival has many categories with a trophy awarded for each. The festival organizers “love film and it shows.”
