Moviegoers Are Obsessed With Beyonce

Moviegoers were obsessed with Obsessed this weekend, making the Beyonce-starring psycho-thriller the number one movie at the box office with $28.5 million. The Fatal Attraction-like movie, also starring Idris Elba and Ali Larter, made back all of its $20 million budget and grossed more than the other three new wide releases combined.

The Zac Efron vehicle, 17 Again, lost 50 percent of its audience from last week, falling to the number two spot with $11.6 million. Coming in a close third with $11.4 million was Fighting, starring Channing Tatum and directed by A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints‘ Dito Montiel. The Soloist, based on the true story of a schizophrenic classical musician and the reporter who befriends him, debuted with $9.7 million in fourth place, lagging behind opening numbers for stars Jamie Foxx and Robert Downey Jr.’s recent movie releases. And Disney’s Earth, the expanded version of the Discovery Channel’s “Planet Earth,” rounded out the top five movies with an estimated $8.6 million, bringing its five-day total to $14.2 million.

The Informers, based on a collection of Bret Easton Ellis’ short stories, debuted in limited release with $300,000 in 482 theaters, and James Toback’s Tyson, a documentary that peeks into the psyche of fighter Mike Tyson, averaged $7,818 on 11 screens, bringing its weekend total to $86,000.

Next week, Hugh Jackman kicks off the summer blockbuster season a tad early with the highly anticipated (and highly pirated) X-Men Origins: Wolverine sure to claw its way to the top. Also opening is Matthew McConaughey and Jennifer Garner’s romantic comedy Ghosts of Girlfriends Past and the animated Battle for Terra, with the voice acting of Evan Rachel Wood and Justin Long.
