Megamind Brainwashes the Box Office

For those who have been waiting with bated breath to find out which animated supervillain kids movie—this weekend’s new release Megamind or this past summer’s Despicable Me—would have the biggest opening weekend, we can at last report that Megamind’s opening gross of $47.6 million fell short of Despicable Me’s $56.3 million, so drinks are on Steve Carell tonight. Road trip comedy Due Date came in second at the box office, earning $33.5 million in its opening weekend, while Tyler Perry’s fellow new release For Colored Girls came in third place, with $20.1 million. Fourth place went to Red (weekend gross $8.8 million, total gross $71.8 million) and fifth to last week’s number one, Saw 3D (weekend gross $8.2 million, total gross $38.8 million).

Other new releases were political docudrama Fair Game ($700,000); Danny Boyle’s latest, 127 Hours ($265,925); Client 9: The Rise and Fall of Eliot Spitzer ($20,000); Red Hill ($9,000); and Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench ($3,900).

Now that we’ve exhausted our supply of animated supervillain kids movies, what do we have to look forward to? Well, this Wednesday sees the release of Morning Glory (similar to Network in that both involve news anchors, but Morning Glory, being a romantic comedy, will probably feature a lot less angry yelling). Out in wide release next weekend are Unstoppable and Skyline, while limited releases include Cool It, Disko ja tuumasoda (Disco and Atomic War), Helena From the Wedding, Tiny Furniture and You Won’t Miss Me.
