Les Misérables (Jan. 10)
Ladj Ly’s film borrows its title from Victor Hugo to explore class warfare and police brutality in modern France. The film’s clever twist on the ubiquitous use of drone shots is to use them narratively. Cinematographer Julien Poupard utilizes a mix of both 16mm and digital. The film is France’s Official Submission for the Foreign Language Oscar.
