Another weekend and another win for the dog. Marley & Me, the David Frankel-directed, Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston-starring family flick, netted $24.1 million over the weekend pushing it over the $100 million mark ($107 million, to be exact) in 11 days. Finishing the weekend in second with a $20.3 million weekend was Bedtime Stories, directed by Adam Shankman (Hairspray) and starring Adam Sandler, Keri Russell, Guy Pearce and Russell Brand.
Rounding out the top five were David Fincher’s The Curious Case of Benjamin Button ($18.4 million), Bryan Singer’s Valkyrie ($14 million) and Peyton Reed’s Yes Man ($13.8 million).
Edward Zwick‘s Defiance, the lone new release of the weekend, pulled in $198,000 in only two theaters. That gives the World War II drama, starring Daniel Craig, Liev Schreiber and Jamie Bell, an astounding per theater average of $60,500. (For comparison, Marley & Me‘s per theater average in its first weekend was $10,448.)
This week moviegoers get the releases of Bride Wars, directed by Gary Winick (13 Going on 30) and starring Anne Hathaway, Kate Hudson and Candice Bergen; The Unborn, directed by David S. Goyer (writer on The Dark Knight) and starring Odette Yustman, Gary Oldman, Cam Gigandet, Meagan Good and Carla Gugino; and Not Easily Broken, adapted from a T.D.
