Marley & Me Enjoys a Record-Breaking Christmas

After enjoying a $14.7 million first day gross, the largest Christmas Day opening ever, Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston’s family-friendly Marley & Me went on to win the weekend with $37 million and a four-day total of $51.7 million. Coming in second was the week’s other PG release, Bedtime Stories, starring Adam Sandler, which brought in $28.1 million for the weekend and $38.6 million over four days. Rounding out the top five were David Fincher’s The Curious Case of Benajmin Button with $27.2 million, Valkyrie with $21.5 million and last week’s number one, Yes Man, with $16.4 million.

Frank Miller’s The Spirit was the only Christmas Day wide release not to crack the top five, sputtering into ninth place with a four-day total of $10.3 million, less than any of the top three movies made on Christmas Day alone.

With only one new release this week, a limited run for Ed Zwick’s Defiance starring Daniel Craig and Liev Schreiber, Christmas’ heavy-hitters will have another week to fight it out. Check back next week at the Top of the Box Office report to see who wins.
