Joker Sequel; Sundance Shake-Up; Black Adam Trailer

Get ready for the Joker sequel; Sundance festival director Tabitha Jackson is leaving after only two years; Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is released from his tomb in the trailer for Black Adam. All in today’s Movie News Rundown.

But First: True crime fans, lend me your ear. A new docuseries called Keep Sweet: Pray and Obey just dropped on Netflix today, and it’s all about the shocking details of what’s been going on inside the polygamous offshoot of the Mormon church called the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, or FLDS. Trust me when I say this is the gnarliest and most entertaining docuseries I’ve watched in a very long time. And once you do watch it, you’ll no doubt be wondering where FLDS leader Warren Jeffs is now. I’ve got the answers right here.

Joker Sequel: Director Todd Phillips posted two pictures on Instagram Tuesday: the cover of the script of the next Joker film, called Folie à Deux, and one of star Joaquin Phoenix reading it. The title is interesting because Folie à Deux is actually a term for a mental disorder also known as shared delusion disorder. According to the Indian Journal of Psychiatry, the condition affects “two or more individuals, usually the members of a close family,” and symptoms include paranoid delusions which one person transmits to another. Could this mean the Joker is getting a companion this time, perhaps Harley Quinn? Only time will tell.

Tabitha Jackson Departs Sundance: After two pandemic years as director of the Sundance Film Festival, Jackson is leaving her position, a statement from the Sundance Institute reads. Jackson previously served as the Sundance Institute’s Documentary Film Program director from 2013-2020. In the interim, Sundance Institute CEO Joana Vicente will take over while she looks for a replacement, and director of programming Kim Yutani has been promoted to a senior member of the institute. No official word has been released yet on what caused Jackson’s exit, but she expressed kind words for the festival via a statement, promising that “Going forward, working with and for artists and their freedom of creative expression will continue to be my guiding light.”

Robert De Niro Says: The Tribeca film festival co-founder says the festival is working with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to include a message in support of Ukraine before each screening. Julia Garner Is Killing It: The Ozark and Inventing Anna actress has been offered the coveted role of Madonna in Universal Pictures’ upcoming biopic directed by Madonna herself, Variety reports. Garner hasn’t yet accepted the offer but is expected to.

Anthony Hopkins: Has joined the cast of Rebel Moon, a new Netflix sci-fi adventure movie directed by Justice League‘s Zack Snyder, according to Deadline. He will voice a sentient robot named Jimmy in the film about a peaceful colony threatened by a sinister army.

Black Adam Trailer: Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson released the trailer for DC Comics and Warner Bros.’ Black Adam. “This passion project has become my DNA and the hierarchy of power in the DC Universe will change,” Johnson wrote on Twitter. “The world needed a hero. It got BLACK ADAM… Rage.” The story takes place as Black Adam is freed from his tomb about 5,000 years after being given powers by the Egyptian Gods and then imprisoned.
