James Cameron Says Avatar 3 Will Introduce Less-Nice Fire Na’vi: ‘I’ve Only Shown Their Good Sides’

James Cameron is giving clues as to what audiences can expect from the third Avatar installment, and it’s going to introduce some baddies into the bunch of Pandora’s multiple Na’vi tribes.

In an interview with French outlet 20 Minutes, Cameron said he intends for the third movie to show “cultures different from those I have already shown.”

Since the first movie focused on the forest Na’vi, called the Omaticaya, and Avatar: The Way of Water introduced the water-dwelling Metkayina, it only makes sense for the third movie to introduce a fire tribe. And that’s exactly what Cameron intends to do.

“The fire will be represented by the ‘Ash People.’ I want to reveal the Nav’is from another angle because, for the moment, I have only shown their good sides,” Cameron told 20 Minutes. “In the early films, there are very negative human examples and very positive Na’vi examples. In Avatar 3, we’ll do the opposite.”

The yet-unnamed third Avatar film is currently slated to come out in December 2024, with a fourth and fifth film coming in the years to follow.

But the fire people aren’t the only surprises Cameron has up his sleeve for the third movie.

“We will also explore new worlds, while continuing the story of the main characters. I can say that the last parts will be the best,” he added. “The others were an introduction, a way to set the table before serving the meal. But, obviously, everything will depend on how Avatar 2 will be received, if it will find its audience.”

Avatar: The Way of Water is currently playing in theaters. Since it arrived on Dec. 16, it has already accumulated $1.4 billion at the global box office. It stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Kate Winslet, Stephen Lang, Cliff Curtis, Jemaine Clement, Edie Falco, Jamie Flatters, Britain Dalton, Jack Champion, and Bailey Bass.
