The fifth annual Indy Shorts International Film Festival has a star-studded lineup you won’t want to miss, including short films starring Kevin Bacon, Amanda Seyfried, and Colman Domingo.

The Academy Award-Qualifying festival, which is part of Heartland Film, began Tuesday and goes until this Sunday in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Seyfried stars in “Skin & Bone” and Bacon stars alongside Domingo in “North Star,” which Domingo executive produced.

Domingo will receive the festival’s Pioneering Spirit Award, which is given to those who embody Heartland Film’s mission to inspire filmmakers and audiences through the transformative power of film. A Tony Award nominee, Domingo is known for If Beale Street Could Talk, Lincoln, The Butler, Selma, Birth of a Nation, Candyman, Zola, AMC’s Fear the Walking Dead, and HBO’s Euphoria.

Domingo directed, wrote, produced, and stars in another short featured in this year’s festival in the Coming of Age program. It’s an animated short called “New Moon.” He’ll be attending the post-screening Q&As for both films and will receive his award in person at the Awards Party.

Other highlights of this year’s lineup include “Thank You, Mrs. Maravel from Rosie’s Theater Kids,” which features Rosie O’Donnell, “Bus Girl,” which stars Jessica Henwick and Evanna Lynch, and John Leguizamo’s “John Leguizamo Live At Rikers.”

The theme of this year’s Indy Shorts is “The Greatest Shorts on Earth” featuring a carnival focus. In line with that theme, there will be free carnival games, HotBox pizza and cotton candy at the outdoor screenings at Newfields and the Indianapolis Art Center. Other screenings will be held indoors at the Living Room Theaters and will also be shown virtually.

The festival’s 150 short films hail from 25 different countries. Among them are 14 world premieres, 11 U.S. premieres, 53 Midwest premieres, and 50 Indiana premieres.

Indy Shorts was also featured on MovieMaker‘s Best Short Film Film Festivals in the World list as well as our 50 Best Film Festivals Worth the Entry Fee in 2022.

Indy Shorts is an Academy Award-Qualifying Film Festival in all three short film categories, including live-action, documentary and animated. In total, the festival boasts that 29 nominations and 8 Oscar-winning shorts have played at past Indy Shorts festivals.

Festival winners also stand to win cash prizes — over $30,000 will be awarded to winners on Saturday. And if you attend the festival, you’ll have another chance to screen all of the winning films on Saturday night at 9:30 p.m. in the Newfields Amiptheater.

And if you can’t attend in person but you want to check out some shorts, all award-winning shorts will be available to watch virtually starting July 23 at 10 p.m. ET for $13.
