We at MovieMaker don’t really agree with the low-budget Indie Spirit Award sharing Cassavetes’ name.

Cassavetes’ films weren’t particularly inexpensive (Husbands was budgeted at $2.4 million, and that was way back in 1970), and they were never emotionally spare. And yet Cassavetes Award nominees are historically mumblecore filmmakers, producing low-cost, low-stakes films that, ironically, represent the inverse of the Cassavetean philosophy. That said, we’re definitely thrilled to see Starlet on this year’s list. It pretended to be mumblecore, and was anything but by the time the credits rolled.

We don’t mean to be be senselessly critical, of course. There are a bunch of other worthy filmmakers, actors, and cinematographers in the Indie Spirit Award’s litany of nominees, published yesterday afternoon. But as always, there are hordes of egregious inclusions and omissions. Have at it!
