Harry Potter Casts a Spell on the Box Office

The story of Harry Potter may be over, but he certainly went out with a bang. The latest—and final—installment in the lucrative franchise, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II, made box office history this weekend, earning $168,550,000 and unseating the 2008 opening of The Dark Knight as the largest movie opening ever. If only Batman had magic powers!

Harry Potter also kicked Transformers out of the number one slot at the box office, but Michael Bay and the Autobots have already made more than $300 million, so they are likely not complaining. Horrible Bosses came in at number three (weekend gross $17.6 million, total gross $60 million), The Zookeeper hung out at number four (weekend $12.3 million, total $40 Million) and rounding out the top five was Cars 2 (weekend $8.3 million, total $165 million)

The list of new releases also includes Disney’s Winnie the Pooh, which made $8 million to rest at number six in the rankings. Other films that premiered in limited release were Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, Tabloid!, Life, Above All and Salvation Boulevard.

Out in wide release next week is the Chris Evans superhero flick, Captain America: The First Avenger, and the Mila Kunis-Justin Timberlake romantic comedy, Friends with Benefits, with Another Earth, Autoerotic, A Little Help, Myth of the American Sleepover, Sarah’s Key and Singham set for limited releases.
