Hollywood has spent the last few years in the midst of a reckoning about how its films influence society at large in good and bad ways. Movements from #MeToo to Black Lives Matter have sparked discussions about ending harmful stereotypes and tropes — as well as a backlash from people who say Hollywood’s efforts, however well meaning, can feel like pandering or tokenism.
