Doorpost Film Project Seeks Films With Meaning

Tired of the disposable entertainment dominating movie theaters today? So are the forces behind the Doorpost Film Project. The online short film contest hopes to encourage more substantial fare by seeking entries that deal with one of the following seven concepts: Love, Greed, Redemption, Pain, Forgiveness, Freedom or Energy. With over $300,000 in cash prizes, it’s a can’t-miss opportunity for moviemakers with profound visions.

According to Brendan Trinkle, the competition’s lead writer and editor, the Doorpost Film Project seeks to offer an antidote to the bulk of lightweight cultural offerings by requesting submissions that will leave a more lasting impression with viewers. “The vision for the Doorpost came as a reaction to the growing trend in media culture toward trivial, thoughtless content that only asks for an immediate and superficial response from its audience,” says Trinkle. “We want to provoke thought and guide discussion toward more meaningful topics at the core of life’s experiences. These seven concepts—energy, love, pain, greed, redemption, forgiveness and freedom—are all at the heart of that dialogue.”

Submissions, which should be longer than five minutes, are due by May 1, 2008. The grand prize winner will receive $100,000 and an all-expenses-paid trip to Los Angeles to meet with development studios and producers. Second- and third-place winners will be awarded $30,000 and $20,000, respectively. According to Trinkle, the $100,000 grand prize is the largest ever for an online short competition. “TheDoorpost.com is designed to cater to artists’ needs and create community around their work, connecting them to peers, fans and the film industry,” he says.
