Martin Scorsese and Steve James Pick up Nominations for the 2012 DGA Awards

Three days after receiving a Directors Guild of America (DGA) Award nomination for Hugo, Martin Scorsese has picked up another nomination from the guild, courtesy of his documentary George Harrison: Living in the Material World. If he wins in the Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Documentaries category when the awards are announced at the 64th Annual DGA Awards Dinner on Saturday, January 28th, the director will have achieved a DGA Award trifecta of sorts; he’s already picked up a win each in the Feature Film (The Departed) and Dramatic Television Series (“Boardwalk Empire”) categories.

For him to win this year, though, Scorsese will have to beat out the competition. Also nominated are Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky (Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory), James Marsh (Project Nim), Richard Press (Bill Cunningham New York) and, notably, Steve James for The Interrupters. This marks James’ third DGA Award nomination; he won in 1995 for his documentary Hoop Dreams, which was famously snubbed by the Academy that year. Likewise, The Interrupters, despite receiving near-universal critical acclaim (it was also named the year’s best documentary by the Cinema Eye Honors, held last night), did not find itself on the feature documentary shortlist for this year’s Oscars.

For more information about this year’s DGA Awards—including the directors nominated in the television and commercial categories (no, Scorsese isn’t one of them), visit www.dga.org.
