Oscar-winning cinematographer Chris Menges will receive the 2010 American Society of Cinematographers’ (ASC) International Achievement Award, presented at the ASC Outstanding Achievement Awards. Menges won Oscars for both The Killing Fields and The Mission and worked on other critically praised films, such as Notes on a Scandal and The Reader.

The International Achievement Award is presented annually to a cinematographer who has made considerable contributions to the world of moviemaking. “Chris Menges has dedicated his career to helping to create films that tell the important stories of our times,” says ASC president Michael Goi. “He has a unique talent for creating compelling images that pull audiences into those stories.”

Menges got his start in film when he was 17, as an assistant to his neighbor, documentary producer Allan Forbes. Menges broke into the cinematography scene with several films: Kes, the first of his 12 collaborations with director Ken Loach, Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back and The Killing Fields, for which he won his first Oscar.

The ASC started in 1919 and has more than 450 active and associate members supporting the art and skill of moviemaking today. The award will be given to Menges during the 24th annual ASC Outstanding Achievement Awards on Feb. 27, 2010.
