Chandi Chowk to the United States

Thanks to Nikhil Advani’s Chandni Chowk to China, Friday, January 16, 2009, marks a day of many firsts. It is the day that will see the widest U.S. and Canadian release ever for a Bollywood film, as Chandni Chowk prepares to open on more than 125 screens in more than 50 markets. The movie is also being touted as the first-ever Bollywood kung-fu comedy, which really begs the question, “What took so long?”

The movie is about a lowly cook named Sidhu, played by Indian megastar Akshay Kumar, who works in Chandni Chowk, Delhi but dreams of bigger things. Such bigger things come to him in the form of two travelers who woo him to China with promises of regality, which really means battling Hojo, a fierce bad guy played by kung-fu legend Gordon Liu (Kill Bill, Master Killer).

Other firsts for Chandni Chowk to China:

*The first Bollywood film distributed by Warner Bros.

*The first Indian production to be shot in China.

*The first movie allowed by the Chinese government to shoot on the Great Wall of China.

*The first Bollywood film for powerhouse martial arts choreographer Huan-Chiu Ku (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Kill Bill).
