If you haven’t heard of the New York City club, CBGB, you soon will. Fans of American Punk Rock music will be excited to hear that XLrator Media has just acquired the distribution rights for the CBGB movie. CBGB, which derived its name from its initial appeal to “country, bluegrass, and blues,” opened its doors in 1973 and remained a vital part of the punk rock scene until its closing in 2006. Home to iconic bands such as The Ramones, Sonic Youth, The Police, The B-52s, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Wallflowers, Green Day and many more over the years, the film will focus on CBGB and its founder Hilly Kristal.
This film is sure to appeal to a wide range of audiences, both young and old alike, coupling punk rock favorites with some of the biggest names in Hollywood. Those who aren’t enticed by the classic soundtrack, which includes songs by Blondie, Iggy Pop, the Talking Heads, The Ramones, The Police and more, may be drawn to the surplus of star-power. The film features actors like Alan Rickman (Harry Potter), Rupert Grint (Harry Potter), Justin Bartha (The Hangover), Malin Ackerman (Watchmen, Rock of Ages) Johnny Galecki (“The Big Bang Theory”), Ashley Greene (The Twilight Saga), Freddy Rodriguez (“Six Feet Under”), Joel David Moore (Avatar), Stana Katic (“Castle”), and the Foo Fighter’s Taylor Hawkins.
CBGB is directed by Bottle Shock’s Randall Miller. He also produced the film along with Hilly Kristal’s daughter, Lisa Kristal Burgman. The much anticipated film is set to release nationwide October 2013. This release date strategically coincides with New York’s CBGB Music Festival this Fall, which showcases over 500 bands across New York City.
