Holding on to the top spot this weekend was Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island, which earned $22.2 million over the weekend, bringing its total gross up to $75 million. Spots two and three were new releases, with Kevin Smith’s Cop Out coming in at number two, earning $18.5 million, and the horror film The Crazies earning $16.5 million, enough to grab it spot number three. Avatar came in at number four, earning $14 million, enough to push its total gross over the $700 million mark (geez, took you long enough, Avatar!) Rounding out the top five was Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, which earned $9.8 million, with a total gross of $71.2 million.
Also new this weekend were limited releases A Prophet, The Yellow Handkerchief, The Art of the Steal and Prodigal Sons, which all performed well on a limited amount of screens. The first weekend in March sees two new releases: Tim Burton’s adaptation of Alice in Wonderland and Antoine Fuqua’s Brooklyn’s Finest, starring Ethan Hawke. Will Avatar get pushed out of the top five by these two new releases? We’ll have to wait and see.
