Box Office Gets Stung by The Green Hornet

The Green Hornet‘s weekend gross of $34.0 million allowed it to grab the number one spot at the box office this weekend, making it the first superhero movie of 2011 to do so. This means that if any of 2011’s later superhero movies—you know, Thor, X-Men: First Class, Green Lantern, Captain America—fail to grab that top spot on their debut weekend, the under-performing film’s director will be subject to all sorts of superhero-themed taunts and pranks from their more successful compatriots at their superhero-themed biweekly brunches (they have those, right?). Second place went to The Dilemma, which earned $17.4 million on its debut weekend despite its lack of superheroics. Wrapping up the top five were True Grit (weekend gross $11.2 million, total gross $127.4 million), The King’s Speech (weekend gross $9 million, total gross $44.5 million) and Black Swan (weekend gross $8.1 million, total gross $72.9 million).

The only other new release this weekend was the ensemble comedy-drama The Heart Specialist, which earned $539,738.

Competing for the top spot at the box office next weekend are The Company Men, No Strings Attached and The Way Back, with The Woodmans, Applause, Mumbai Diaries, Evangelian: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance, The Housemaid and Tetsuo III: The Bullet Man out in limited release.
