Why He Scares Us: Like Lon Chaney’s Quasimodo or Bela Lugosi’s Dracula, Boris Karloff became the face of one of the horror genre’s biggest monsters with his portrayal of Dr. Frankenstein’s Monster. Without Karloff, audiences wouldn’t have the painfully slow walk of Michael Myers as hunts victims in Halloween, nor the monotone growl of all the zombies to ever make their way onto the big screen. Karloff’s biggest contribution to horror, however, was the lifeless expression he wore in his eyes while on camera. For this, monsters everywhere owe him a big debt of gratitude.
