Avatar Continues to Conquer the Box Office

Two new releases tried to dethrone Avatar from its number one spot this past weekend, but it looks like Avatar’s defeat isn’t yet in the cards. After a month and a half, James Cameron’s blockbuster is still number one, earning $30 million this weekend, bringing its total gross up to $594 million. The two new releases—Mel Gibson’s Edge of Darkness ($17.1 million) and the rom-com When in Rome ($12 million)—came in at two and three, respectively. Rounding out the top five were the family comedy The Tooth Fairy ($10 million over the weekend) and The Book of Eli ($8.7 million).

Out in limited release were Preacher’s Kid, North Face, Saint John of Las Vegas and Off and Running—of those, only Preacher’s Kid managed to crack the top 25. Out next week and competing with Avatar—good luck with that—are the John Travolta action movie From Paris with Love and the romantic drama Dear John. Out in limited release next week are Frozen, about three skiers stranded on a chairlift, and the British crime drama Red Riding trilogy (consisting of Red Riding: 1974, Red Riding: 1980 and Red Riding: 1983).
