Samuel Bayer’s remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street took the top spot at the box office this weekend, earning $32.2 million in its first weekend of release. How to Train Your Dragon slid from the number one spot to number two; its weekend gross was $10.8 million, with a total gross so far of $192.3 million. The Jennifer Lopez rom-com The Back-up Plan took spot number three, earning $9.2 million (total gross $22.9 million); Date Night came in at number four with $7.6 million (total gross $73.6 million). The only new release besides A Nightmare on Elm Street to crack the top five was Furry Vengeance, which came in at number five, earning $6.5 million. Other new releases in limited release were Harry Brown ($180,957) and Please Give ($128,696).

The headline for next week’s Top of the Box Office can already be written: “Iron Man 2 Takes Spot Number 1″. Yep, the much-anticipated sequel is coming out this week, and nothing will stand in its way. The only other movies coming out are all limited releases: Babies, Mother and Child and Casino Jack and the United States of Money.
