MovieMaker Magazine’s 2017 Guide to Making Horror Movies is the second in our annual series, starting with last year’s inaugural edition.

This year, we welcomed indie auteur Ti West as our guest editor, whose brilliant intro (read it here) puts this challenge to readers: “Is there still reverence for cinema amongst modern audiences?”

Elsewhere, you’ll find tips on amping up the scares in your screenplay, lessons from composer greats like John Carpenter and Harry Manfredini, insights from producer Larry Fessenden on selling your film, and advice on nailing your grassroots horror promo campaign. There are also interviews with the makers of 2016 horror hits Under the Shadow, Blair Witch, Eyes of My Mother and more.

First published as a special section in MovieMaker’s Fall 2016 issue, with a brilliant cover by illustrator Peter Strain, this eBook edition has been expanded to include extra stories unavailable in print or online. They include:

One of Us: Tim League and Brad Miska argue that joining a horror anthology is the best way for an indie filmmaker to break in

“M is for Masticate,” a segment of horror anthology The ABCs of Death 2

Press Your Luck: Horror journalist Izzy Lee’s tips on using the genre press to your advantage

Multitasking like a Boss: Former Fangoria editor and horror moviemaker Chris Alexander on building a genre empire without burning out

Pushed to Her Border: In this excerpt from her memoir, House of Psychotic Women, Kier-La Janisse examines and identifies with Isabelle Adjani’s hysterical performance in Possession

The eBook edition is on sale via Amazon. Alternatively, to purchase it as a direct PDF download from MovieMaker, email assistant@moviemaker.com. You will receive a response with payment information and a link. MM
