The Shape of Water

Few directors can hope to have a stellar masterpiece like Pan’s Labyrinth in their filmography, never mind visionary films like Hellboy, Cronos, and Crimson Peak, yet Mexican director Guillermo del Toro has The Shape of Water up his sleeve. Mute worker Elisa stumbles upon an experiment, a humanoid creature that finally sees her as human. Del Toro takes his audience on an emotionally sprawling journey, an intelligent and singular fairy tale featuring Doug Jones, Michael Stuhlbarg, Michael Shannon, Octavia Spencer, and Richard Jenkins. Winner of the top prize at the Venice Film Festival, Kneedler says Del Toro “has crafted an elegant modern fairy tale steeped in beautiful swampy dread.”
