A Fantastic Woman

Some Oscar buzz is alight with this drama from Chilean director Sebastián Lelio (Gloria), about a young woman, Marina (Danielle Vega) and the grief she experiences after the death of her older partner. The aspiring singer must reconcile with bereavement and bigotry, asserting her identity even if it may cost her. Leilo shrouds this story in neon and music, and newcomer Vega is absolutely stellar. The film went on to win the Silver Bear for Screenplay at the Berlin Film Festival, as well as the Teddy Award for Best Queer Film, and Kneedler calls Vega’s performance “one of the most fearless performances of the year.”
