Sticking with the 90s theme, Practical Magic (1998) stars Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman as Sally and Gillian Owens, a pair of witch sisters who are under a terrible curse — any man who they fall in love with dies. But when a cop gets on the case investigating the death of one of their boyfriends, he tests the power of the curse. This one has major Halloween vibes. In fact, Sally and Gillian Owens would make a great Halloween costume for two besties. Watch if you want a Halloween movie that isn’t super campy or a horror film.
If you, like me, really miss New England right now, this Connecticut-based 1988 rom-com is just the thing for you. Another Julia Roberts classic, Mystic Pizza follows three sisters who work in a pizza shop and go through various romantic trials and tribulations. It also stars Annabeth Gish, Lili Taylor, Vincent D’Onofrio and Adam Storke. It’s got autumn by the sea vibes, and as many laughs as it does tears. Watch if you like big hair and the wealthy bad-boy trope.
One more for those who really want to get into the spooky spirit. Johnny Depp plays Constable Ichabod Crane in Tim Burton’s 1999 film Sleepy Hollow, come to investigate a string of killings suspected to be at the hands of the Headless Horseman. It also stars two Harry Potter alums — Richard Griffiths and Michael Gambon. Oh, and Christopher Walken! What’s not to like? This one is probably the spookiest one on the whole list, so it’s a good one to end your fall movie-watching spree — and just in time for Halloween. Watch if you like late 1700s Regency Era fashion and Johnny Depp.
If you need a horror movie to get you into the spirit of fall, then try Nia DaCosta’ 2021 Candyman remake starring Jordan Peele and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. When ghost stories of a hand-hooked killer haunt a Chicago neighborhood, an artist begins to explore the horrid history of the Candyman. Just don’t say his name five times while looking in the mirror, okay? Why take chances? Watch if you like scary movies.
