Stepmom
This 1998 drama is a slow burn of a tear-jerker. It follows Julia Roberts as the titular stepmother, Isabel, who ends up with an older man (Ed Harris) who has two kids (Jenna Malone and Liam Aiken) from his previous marriage. The kids swear allegiance to their mother, Jackie (Susan Sarandon), who can’t stand Isabel for obvious reasons. But when Jackie gets diagnosed with cancer, they all have to work together to find a way through it. You can see why it’s sad.
