Live From Sundance: The Surrogate
In writer/director Ben Lewin's The Surrogate, John Hawkes (Winter's Bone, Martha Marcy May Marlene) plays Mark O'Brien, a man stricken with polio who spends most of his time confined to an iron lung and, at the age of 36, enlists the aid of his priest (William H. Macy) to help him find a professional sex surrogate so that he may lose his virginity. The film is based on the true story of O'Brien, a poet and journalist whose story was previously documented in the Academy Award-winning short Breathing Lessons: The Life and Work of Mark O'Brien. The Surrogate, one of the breakout hits of this year's Sundance, has already been acquired for distribution by Fox Searchlight.
