How many drafts does it take you to find your screenplay acceptable?

Usually I might do two drafts.  My latest project, I’m on draft four.  Each draft takes it a step further into what I want, yet it opens the door for more exploring. So I was just wondering, how many drafts people usually do?

I’ve heard some of the best films out there go through six or even ten drafts. It also depends on how you prepare and how much you do before writing the actual script. But I guess it takes as many drafts as you feel it’s ready. I tend to go through stages - I have a moment when I think there isn’t much else I can do with it but when I let it sit for a bit and go back to it, I usually find a lot to improve. You could it give it to someone to read, and see how your story has come across.

It’s better to have more draft and at the end a good one ( the one that makes money ) that 1 perfect one. Usually people run all their life for 1 perfect one and they don’t get it!

Ghost took 17 drafts apparently. the most I’ve done is 5 drafts of a script. That was 2002. It’s sitting in my room gathering dust, but I’ve written something smaller, which I hope to film, then someday go back and polish the dusty old script.

there will always be something that can be changed about your script.  It really depends if it portrays the story and effect when the acting comes into play.
