QuickTime MOV files are produced by most cameras in Movie mode these days (Canon,Olympus,Minolta....) yet Windows seems incapable of reading, editing and merging such files as MovieMaker doesn’t support the Apple Codec which is now THE standard.

Does anyone have a suggestion which leaves the MOV file unchanged?

hi,costa

You won’t want to edit with Native Canon EOS 7D MOV files, most CPU’s bottleneck when scrubbing through these files on a timeline. It’s very CPU intensive and not really meant for editing. Do you have access to Adobe Media Encoder? If so that’ll help you to convert your files to another friendlier format.

Many people recommend Cineform Neoscene $129.I’ve not tried this option.
Right now,i find a cheapper option,i purchased Pavtube HD Converter(only $35) which converts the MOV files on import.

I downloaded a demo version first and found it was definitly worth buying. One thing I liked about the demo version is that it worked the whole video, not just the first 2 minutes. It allowed me to get a good idea of the file size to quality ratio.

you can use a video converter to convert the mod file to avi or wmv, then you can use the windows movie maker to edit.
I always use leawo:http://www.leawo.com/leawo-video-converter/

Try Quicktime player instead of Media player.

You have to be extremely careful, because many times when converting this you compress it as well, you will lose quality very fast. I recommend Streamclip. It was made specifically for the 5D Mrk II as well as the 7D since so many film makers turned to this camera so quickly. You can convert from .mov to apple pro res which is final cut but many other formats as well. The great thing about this is that you can chose to compress or not compress at all. Though not compressing at all and converting it to apple pro res for FCP turns it into an enormous file, so make sure you have storage space. This converter is also free.
