When I have shot 16mm or video I always use the WIDE ANGLE lens or just have my actors not move.
I am wanting to grow more and I have seen FOLLOW FOCUS systems as well as even AUTOMATED systems that can be rented on the cheap.
I am perplexed about the relationship between the follow focus puller and the camera op, while on a set that is indie and low budget...micro budget.
I know that most people just do it themselves...camera op that is....
but as far as I can tell, when I see larger budgets, that have two people doing the job, I see MEASURING TAPE and this boggles my mind.
What actually is this process besides measuring distance? for certain points? or marks?
Aren’t the new digital camera able to MEMORIZE these points of focus? I know this will shock hollywood and replace a job that a human does...but why not?
Make the focus puller the camera op or the director?
again, I love the wide angle lens, but over use, just looks HIP HOP video or PORNO....and it doesn’t do the DRAMATIC well....looking more COMEDY and surreal......
Please if there is anyone with resources that explain this FOCUS PULLING and relationship with the CAMERA OP (and might I add STEADI CAM op) which is really the main idea…
I see these wireless systems, and what again is this measuring? I see? how do they choose which places to measure..besides the actors nose....or eyes....
when the actor is going to be tracking and moving....like in the COEN BROS films....or on any television drama today on television....
I was told to think the scene into a stack of still images....but that still doesn’t help when trying to bridge them in focus at the same time....
also is the 2nd AC the focus puller? or is there a simple role for such a person? I understand there is no BLACK AND WHITE like in CAMERA OPS and DP"s…
but again, I am trying to go to the next level without going over budget on CREW...as I find putting too many cooks into the kitchen very daunting.....
much help and I would be honored to have a few meetings as I am in Pre-production, with a new HVX200 and I would like to hire someone with experience that is in HOLLYWOOD…
cheers
