Adapted from or Inspired by a novella?

I read Lan Samantha Chang’s novella “Hunger” a few years ago, and haven’t forgotten about it since. Recently, I have become almost *haunted* with certain parts of the novella, and wish to write either an adaption or a screenplay inspired by it.

Which approach should I go? What sort of complications would arise if I adapt it, vs. saying that a somewhat different version was inspired by it?

If it’s a small enough publishing house, you might be able to get the adaptation rights for a low rate, or even free.  Call the publisher!

Hmm, it’s not a small house, unfortunately. I guess you’re saying I’d have to have found a team to produce the movie (and adequate funding) before attempting to write the adaption?

I’d definitely advise securing an option on the book’s film rights before going to all the trouble of adapting it into a screenplay.  Don’t be intimidated by the size of the publishing house.  Most big publishers have smaller, more autonomous labels working within them that may work with you for a decent option rate.
