I would add Alex Proyas, Darren Aronovsky, and Robert Rodriguez, and I’d second Fincher and Tarentino. Each of these guys has a mixed record, but when they’re on, they’re on!

yeah, i have a problem with you listing george lucas… its a rare talent to take great actors and get bad performances out of them.

in my opinion, a large amount of the director’s talent lies in pulling great performances from the actors. lucas hates working with actors and it shows. lucas has had great success with writing, producing, sound design and special effects… but i honestly think hes the most overrated director around.

however, i would add paul thomas anderson to the your list. he consistently get great performances from his actors.
