Best Films of 2007

Went to the cinema this year? Good. Which films did you find most memorable and entertaining, and why?

“Babel” was good, I liked the structure and the different stories of different people who were all connected in some way.
“Zodiac” - it was an original murder mystery where you saw the murders and even then you couldn’t tell who it was (or was it one or more guys) and watching the guys working on the puzzle; I only wish it had focussed on one main character because Gyllenhaal’s guy only took over during the second half of the film.
I expected more from “Science of Sleep”, it was funny but just died for some reason. I guess it didn’t have all that dream absurdity that it could have had.
“Control” was very good, although the imagery (directed by a photographer) was so good that it pulled you out of the story; excellent performance by Sam Riley.
“Sunshine” was visually brilliant - who can forget the shiny shield - a subtle ride that goes from a dedicated mission to challenge everyone’s sanity.
“Hot Fuzz” - great script, Dalton was superb as the villain (just that evil grin alone was so funny).
“La Vie en Rose” - the Edith Piaf film, slightly messy script but well shot and emotionally very tense thanks to an unbelievable performance by Marion Cotillard.
“Pan’s Labyrinth” - interesting world and memorable art direction but also the script wasn’t too strong, I found some of the character’s implausible (why would the dad care about some carrot under the bed?)
“Bourne Ultimatum” very good action film, excellently executed.
“Planet Terror” - very funny, it is clearly what it wants to be - a parody of poor horror/action films. I loved the explosions that just came out of nowhere!
“Atonement” was excellent, it was brilliant for what it did with the structure and shifting point of views. If you think it’s a boring war romance, you’re wrong, it’s an excellent story about how someone’s bad decision ruins lives.
“Michael Clayton” was alright but not brilliant. Main character was slightly passive and mostly reacting to stuff that were happening around him rather than going after something he wanted.

The Simpsons Movie and Die Hard 4 were a huge disappointment.

Plain and simple… your favorite film… and why?

For me it’s Mann’s Heat. Great story, fantastic acting, beautiful music and imagery, amazingly precise and tactical gun battles. The characters are compelling, and McCauley and Hanna are the only people who understand each other… and they’re on totally opposite sides. It’s not even so much about the crime but the humanity that compels the story.

Upcoming films

This forum is developing, how exciting!

To start this new one off - which upcoming films are people most looking forward to seeing?

Personally, I’d like to see Haneke’s American remake of “Funny Games” and Coppola’s new film.
Going to see the new Coen brothers’ film “No Country for Old Men” and a Werner Herzog film “Rescue Dawn” at a festival next week, so that’ll be interesting.

And looking forward to Tim Burton’s “Sweeney Todd”.
