Ranked R for violence and powerful language.

* * * * * * * * * *

Every now and then you really do encounter a film which has figures you have not observed in a large number of other movies previously year alone. One which will give you places and demonstrate stuff you haven’t experienced in each and every other movie, which teaches you the lives of individuals most movies think before with. Regrettably, more often than not individuals movies are independent films that play solely within the “art houses”, where most most moviegoers never venture simply because they can just learn a film is available if they have seen it marketed on television or perhaps in a large display ad within the newspaper. This really is this type of movie, and anybody who passes it by simply because they are not aware of it really is passing up on something.

“Winter’s Bone” is occur the Ozark mountain tops, among people so overcome by poverty that they’ll turn to whatever they need to do to be able to survive. Most of them have turned to drug dealing, such as the father of youthful Ree, that has been arrested for your very factor. He’s set up the household home as bond, after which disappeared… and therefore if he can not be discovered by his trial date, his family becomes destitute. But his daughter Ree is not prepared to just allow that to happen… despite the fact that she does not even start to realize the importance from the existence-threatening situations she’ll find herself in when she starts her determined look for her father.

There’s just one other movie I have ever observed in my existence that jogs my memory by any means of “Winter’s Bone"… that being “Frozen River” from 2008, which virtually nobody saw but which led to a properly-deserved Oscar nomination for star Melissa Leo. I’m quite prepared to predict at this time that even though stars of the film are virtually unknown, a minimum of two seem to be basically guaranteed a just right next year’s Oscar ballot. Jennifer Lawrence as Ree is really a genuine pressure of character, only 17 years of age but still in senior high school but able to holding her family (including her more youthful brother and sister, and her mother, who’s not often “psychologically present") together, and looking out on her father regardless of a number of obstacles that will scare from the bravest of grown ups. All of this while providing existence training to her brothers and sisters, like the moment when one of these asks her whether they can request a neighbor for a few of her bounty, and she or he informs them “Never request for which ought to be given”. It is really an actress who’s almost certain to go large places, though hopefully mostly within the indies. Plus there is John Hawkes as her Uncle “Teardrop”. Who knows quite things to model of him… when she first starts her search, he appears to do everything he is able to to obstruct it, but younger crowd goes beyond he must to be able to help her out… however you are not necessarily certain of his motives for doing that. He’s a lot of layers you cant ever really decide should you love him or hate him, but that is why is him this type of fascinating charater, and Hawkes is simply brilliant within the role.

The setting Can be quite vivid, making the crowd really feel an element of the lives this type of person living. But this film is not only a chronicle of the place along with a people, as wonderfully because it handles to become that. It is also a powerful and chilling Ozark “noir”, a criminal offense drama that just the best crime authors could create, with because the complexness of the good crime novel as anybody could squeeze into one hundred-minute approximately movie. You have often seen criminal “underworlds” in lots of movies, however the drug sellers and operators of meth labs that you will meet within this movie really are a strange mixture of the familiar… this rural land is evenly as frightening because the most run-lower, crime ridden regions of any large city… and also the unique. Simply because you have often seen drug sellers in other movies, that does not mean you have often seen any quite the same as these.

Director Debra Granik, in just her second film, has already been an expert of fashion and atmosphere, developing a remote place far in the “safety” of large-time metropolitan areas, where nobody is protected and also the smallest wrong step in the wrong moment might be fatal. She also uses the cinematography and editing as well as the littlest technical aspects of filmmaking to ratchet in the tension and make up a story full of nearly intolerable suspense. Like every people of her cast, I must really anticipate seeing what she’ll manage to later on, if she will do that much this remarkably so at the start of her career.

All nevertheless, I had been a little surprised to listen to a buddy which i happened to operate into in the same screening I attended remark he thought the film had “a pleasant setting, however it did not genuinely have a plot”. So on one side, Personally i think type of obligated to express the movie is probably not for everybody, but however, I have a difficult time imagining why anybody wouldn’t enjoy this type of genuinely made film. What one could want from the suspense film that “Winter’s Bone” does not have is really a mystery in my experience. And I am speculating the huge most of filmgoers, when they would certainly be prepared to take a risk on the movie that does not have the large stars they have observed in all of the tabloids and does not take foreseeable plot twists, they’ll be very glad they did. Plus, obviously, when Jennifer Lawrence and John Hawkes get nominated the coming year for the best Actress and finest Supporting Actor, correspondingly, they’ll have the ability to possess the satisfaction of telling everybody “The thing is? I said so!”

Colloidal Silver

Silver sol, in essence, is simply silver particles dispersed in purified water. The term “sol” is a chemical designation of a pure mineral permanently suspended is water where the mineral’s charge is transferred to the entire body of water. Differences between preparations are plenty; however, the silver concentration and the size of the particles can vary greatly, as can the bioavailability of the silver and the effectiveness of the solution. There are also variances in the purity of the solution. Solutions made with metallic silver are tested to be more potent than other silver preparations, such as those made with ionic silver. You may have heard of colloidal silver and ionic silver. While these can be effective solutions, I prefer the new silver technology called silver sol, also called silver aquasol technology.

Silver sol preparations are manufactured by a completely different method, that in my opinion produces a far superior result. Silver sol technology uses 10,000 volts of alternating current (AC), while the old colloids use 110 volts of direct current (DC). This significant increase in power essentially supercharges the silver, which results in a solution that has a different atomic structure than the colloids and ionics. The common colloid is missing one electron in its outer shell, which is why it can remove an electron from the bacteria and destroy it.

In this way, colloids and ionic silvers have been very successful in destroying bacterial infections. Silver sol is an Ag 404; it is missing two electrons in its outer shell, which consequently gives it catalytic capabilities. This capability can be described as one electron destroying bacteria, viruses, and mold while the other electron is being recharged. This catalytic conversion allows the silver sol to first destroy then to instantaneously recharge and “kill” again and again – like a rapid-fire machine gun. The result is that silver sol can destroy thousands of time more pathogens than a simple colloid or ionic silver. This means that silver sol can be much more effective at a very safe concentration (5-20 parts per million, which can potentially be consumed every day.

These newer silver preparations rely on engineered nano-particle solutions with higher bioavailability, effectiveness and safety. Metallic silver gives off ultra-violet radiation in narrow wavelengths. These wavelengths are tested to destroy a wide range of pathogens. The narrow wavelength energy radiated from silver produces free radicals that damage their DNA beyond repair. Silver doesn’t even need direct contact with the microbe to create this effect.

Simply put, silver solutions interfere with the energy sources of bacteria, viruses and other microbes. The process is a bit complicated, but basically the charge of silver replaces needed hydrogen atoms, and the result is that it blocks energy sources that microbes need. This reaction can happen within minutes of exposure.

Because silver affects such a basic mechanism of normal microbial function, it is effective against a broad range of pathogens. Even if DNA or RNA structure varies or the mode of attack varies, the basic structure of the pathogen is the same and can be addressed by silver’s non-traditional mode of attack. While typical drugs or antibiotics are effective against six or seven microbes, silver preparations are effective against more than 500 different disease-causing pathogens without encouraging drug resistance and without side effects. And a little goes a long way.

The Benefits of Silver

Broad-spectrum antimicrobial (some silvers have been shown in vitro to destroy bacteria, both forms of viruses, fungus and other significant diseases including the following: MRSA, SARS, malaria, anthrax poisoning, gram-negative bacteria, gram-positive bacteria, Hepatitis C, AIDS, and influenza
Potent anti-inflammatory
Non-toxic, even at high levels
No side effects or contra-indications; safe for all individuals
Doesn’t encourage resistant microbial strains
Has prophylactic potential in disease prevention
Immune system enhancer
Cost-effective
Internal and topical usage
Works synergistically with prescribed antibiotics
In some cases more effective than traditional antibiotics and other drugs
Can indie movie wardrobe have a logo?

Hello!

I’m going to be shooting a feature in April and I wanted to double-check about wardrobe. If a cast member owns a Rolling Stones t-shirt, or a t-shirt they bought that has artwork on it, can the movie include that clothing or is it copyrighted and can’t be included?

I realize that movies from the big studios get PAID to include logos, but I was wondering if an indie movie can even have them at all.

We have clothing from Target, Old Navy, etc., that might have some custom prints or artwork on them.

Thank you so much for your advice and info!

Everyone knows the big festivals: Sundance, Cannes, Toronto. What are some smaller, lesser-known festivals that you’d recommend? They can be festivals that you went to as a moviemaker, or one that you attended as a movie fan. If you had a good time, if it was well-run, if the staff was helpful, if the location was great, if there were good bars, good parties or (most importantly) good movies, let us know.

I personally haven’t been to a lot of film festivals, but there are some niche fests that look fun, like the NYC Food Film Festival (a new category for this fall’s fest will be Food Porn, though the site warns that “The term ‘food porn’ should not be taken literally."), Ashville, North Carolina’s ActionFest (awards include Best Action Sequence and Stunt Coordinator of the Year) and Portland, Oregon’s Faux Film Festival ("We poke fun at stuff!").

So, how ‘bout it? What are your favorite film festivals?
