San Francisco Frozen Film Festival Heats Up

If you dreaded your last high school reunion, imagine how the guys from A Criminal Reunion—a documentary depicting the reunion of prisoners and guards from Alcatraz—feel. It’s just one of the many films being shown at the 2009 San Francisco Frozen Film Festival; a festival that showcases films “made in or pertaining to Bay Area groups and residences,” according to the fest staff. In an effort to fulfill their mission of “creating a sustainable and supportive network of independent artists in the Bay Area,” this non-profit fest goes above and beyond and offers one-of-a-kind activities such as live art shows and a music competition, in addition to film screenings.

SFFFF has a dynamic group of movies on the docket for the 2009 event, which runs July 9 - 11 at the Roxie Theatre. Topics include everything from Buddhism in prison to white rappers’ struggle in the hip-hop world. SFFFF also showcases several collections of “Best Of” short films from 2009. Although several of these films were shown at Cannes or Sundance, they have never before been seen in this format, including compilations of 2009 Best Animated Shorts, Best Short Docs, Best Experimental Shorts and many more.
