Visual Effects Society Honors Avatar and James Cameron

The Visual Effects Society (VES) has announced the winners of the eighth annual VES Awards; to no one’s surprise, the big winner was James Cameron’s technically innovative, sci-fi epic, Avatar, which won six awards. The event, which gives out awards in more than 20 categories covering visual effects in film, animation, television, commercials and video games, also saw Cameron receiving the VES Lifetime Achievement Award.
Among Avatar’s awards was the Outstanding Visual Effects in a Visual Effects Driven Motion Picture. The Outstanding Animation in an Animated Feature Motion Picture award went to Up, which won two other awards. Other film awards went to Sherlock Holmes (Outstanding Supporting Visual Effects in a Feature Motion Picture) and District 9 (Outstanding Compositing in a Feature Motion Picture).
The Visual Effects Society represents visual effects artists who practice in a variety of mediums. For more information, visit http://www.visualeffectssociety.com.

A new type of film making was used in Avatar utilizing a revolutionary style of motion capture coupled with a form of virtual camera technology to film and view the cgi characters in real time as the actors act out the scenes.

Yes but what was it exactly? I am familiar with After Effects and its possibilities but have never ever seen a plug in, tutorial, or training package that addresses doing what was done to these actors in real time. What company produces it?
