On The First Cut
The film always ends up much tighter in the first cut; a lot of things end up being not necessary anyway, just to tell the story.
On The ScreenplayI'm always looking to delete dialogue.
On Relying Too Much on the ScreenplayIt's often hard before you shoot a film to say which bits are going to be superfluous; you have to shoot them but you've got to be careful about what you use.
