He will talk me through the rushes when we're having screenings at the end of the day but it's either pretty self explanatory; when you look at the material you can see what he's intending.

On The First Cut

The film always ends up much tighter in the first cut; a lot of things end up being not necessary anyway, just to tell the story.

On The Screenplay

I'm always looking to delete dialogue.

On Relying Too Much on the Screenplay

It's often hard before you shoot a film to say which bits are going to be superfluous; you have to shoot them but you've got to be careful about what you use.

James Schamus Honored with Trailblazer Award at Woodstock

James Schamus, the man behind Focus Features (think The Constant Gardener, Atonement), was chosen to receive the 2008 Trailblazer Award from the Woodstock Film Festival. Prior to working at Focus he was co-president of independent production company Good Machine for 11 years and won numerous awards for his own work, including the award for Best Screenplay at the 1997 Cannes International Film Festival for The Ice Storm.
