Madea Crushes the Jonas Brothers

Tyler Perry’s Madea Goes to Jail went to the top of the box office for the second week in a row, making the comedy Perry’s highest-grossing movie to date. Though the movie dropped 60 percent from last week, it still managed to beat out Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience, which now has the distinction of bombing in three dimensions. Given the movie’s high level of promotion and the brothers’ extreme popularity, the movie’s paltry $12.7 million stunned many. (Disney’s last 3D concert movie, Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour, opened with $31 million in 2008.)

The weekend’s other new releases didn’t fare much better, with neither Crossing Over nor Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li coming anywhere near the top five. In the 8th spot, Street Fighter brought in $4.6 million and, due to its limited release, Crossing Over stayed out of the top 40 altogether with $75,600 in nine theaters.

Thanks in large part to its Oscar win, Slumdog Millionaire climbed to third place, increasing its numbers by 44 percent. It not only managed to break the $100 million dollar mark but exceeded that number by bringing its total gross to date to $115 million.

Taken stayed strong in fourth place with $9.9 million, bringing its five-week total to $107.8 million. And He’s Just Not That Into You rounded out the top five with $5.8 million.

Next week, Zack Snyder’s Watchmen, with Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Jackie Earle Haley, hopes to bring out the comic book geek in theater audiences everywhere. It won’t have much competition from the other new releases, including The Horsemen with Dennis Quaid, Tokyo!, 12 and Phoebe in Wonderland, with Elle Fanning and Felicity Huffman, all in limited release.

Oh stop.  Journalists are only too happy to jump on this hype machine fueled story of this but the fact of the matter is, the movie did fine - except against the HM movie and the predictions of marketwatchers.

Can we just face the fact that the economy has changed drastically and no one knows the hell they are talking about/predicting anymore when it comes to how people will spend their money?
