Underworld: Awakening Takes a Bite Out of the Box Office

Underworld: Awakening took a bite out of the box office last weekend, earning $25.4 in its first three days and beating out second-place finisher, fellow new release Red Tails (weekend gross $19.1 million), by a substantial margin. Last week’s number one film, Contraband (weekend gross $12.2 million, total gross $46.1 million), fell two spots to number three, while Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close celebrated its first weekend in wide release—it hit select theaters across the country over Christmas weekend—with a weekend gross of $10.5 million (total gross $11.2 million). Rounding out the top five was the newest from Steven Soderbergh, Haywire, which earned $9 million over its first weekend.

Newly out in limited release over the weekend were Coriolanus ($60,000), The Flowers of War ($48,900), Crazy Horse ($10,000) and Ultrasuede: In Search of Halston ($4,000).

Next weekend’s moviegoers will have new wide releases The Grey, Man on a Ledge and One for the Money to choose from, as well as limited releases Declaration of War, The Theatre Bizarre, The Wicker Tree and How Much Does Your Building Weigh, Mr Foster?. Of course, with Oscar nominations being announced tomorrow, you should probably spend next weekend catching up on all the Best Picture noms you’ve yet to see. Time’s running out before the big night!
