Michael Jackson Thrills at the Box Office

The Michael Jackson concert movie This Is It made it to the top of the charts this weekend; the $21.3 million it made over the weekend ($32.5 million total since its October 28th release) was enough to grab the number one spot, but was still considerably less than other releases so far this year. Still, the movie has been performing well internationally, with $68.5 million in international ticket sales.

The thriller Paranormal Activity did well over Halloween weekend, taking the number two spot, while Saw VI fell to number five. Spots three and four went to Law Abiding Citizen and Couples Retreat, respectively.

Out in limited release this weekend were The Boondock Saints 2: All Saints Day—the sequel to the cult classic took the number 16 spot—and the Jared and Jerusha Hess-written comedy Gentlemen Broncos, which hopes to replicate the success of the Hess’ first film, Napoleon Dynamite.

Next week the holiday season will be ushered in by Robert Zemeckis’ A Christmas Carol, starring Jim Carrey. Also being released next weekend are The Box, Men Who Stare at Goats and The Fourth Kind. The much-anticipated Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire also comes out in limited release on November 6th.
